Year End Blow Out Sale!
As indicated by Nate on one of our threads some builders are getting creative with their marketing now. Offering incentives, inducements and new "assured sales programs." All I can say is read the fine print on these, and while you’re at it have your own lawyer go over the contract as well. One prominent builder offers a quasi "guaranteed sale program." In this case people might think the sale of their home is guaranteed, but in reality, if your home isn’t sold by the time the new one is ready then they put your new one up for sale too...If the new on[...]

California Gold Rush: This Is Why Facebook Is Interesting . . .
A few weeks back I spent a Saturday afternoon in Palo Alto crammed into a small room with a couple of hundred people listening to the stories of some of the early Facebook app developers. Believe me, it wasn’t the way I wanted to spend my Saturday. But the enthusiasm was fun to witness and it did feel as if we were all (and we still all are) at the beginning of something big. It was fun to see kids straight out of school suddenly rock stars in the nascent Facebook community, learning how to be entrepreneurs.Whatever your personal and emotional reaction is to Facebook, (and [...]

The major indices gapped higher on the open, drifted down to the flat line by mid-day, then rallied back to their highs in the afternoon. It was a pattern that repeated itself several times last week. The Nasdaq gained 1.9%, the S&P 500 1.4%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average 1.0%. The Fires, The Economy, And Housing
The fires that have swept the region, and that still burn in some places, have been incredibly dramatic in their impact on the day-to-day functioning of our city and have been absolutely devastating to those families who lost their homes. But when people have asked me in recent days how I thought the fires would impact home prices, my answer has been that it wouldn&039;t have much effect at all.It&039;s simply a matter of scale. San Diego is a huge city and -- without minimizing the catastrophic impact to those involved -- the number of homes destroyed represents an extremely small [...]

Winter’s Coming
brrr the chill the last few days gives me that ominous feeling that the white stuff isn’t that far off. Maybe if I don’t mention the S word it won’t come, just like the real estate market if we don’t mention the D word prices won’t go down. Oops. With that chill comes the fall maintenance and winter preparation that most people have already taken care of. I’m just writing this while I’m waiting for a buyer to come in - maybe I’ll just go grab someone off the street and sit them down and talk to them like a buyer. The lower paycheck is due to taking 4 days unpaid to attend my sisters wedding this summer. I took all of my vacation days to prepare for the bar exam and didnt have any left to travel to Cancun. This is exactly why I was hesitant about making any strong financial moves because crap always seems to happen. Coolness Is Optional, Authenticity Is Not
A lot of marketing folks spend a great deal of time worrying if they’ve got the right look. For many this means mastering the look that is considered acceptable in their industry (AKA - like everyone else.) For others, this might unfold as a quest to look cool, trendy or expensive. In the end, the right look is simply a matter of discovering the most authentic look, and for that matter, feel, words and experience, for you. Regardless of how it might be perceived by some. If authentic is conservative, embrace it, if authentic is wild and edgy, go for it, if authentic is cheesy, go fu[...]

Friday Will Be Looking Forward To Next Week
Thursday left us a red day across the broader markets on mixed volume. The NYSE was higher volume while the Nasdaq was on lighter volume. The Nasdaq was taking a rest to see where the stocks after the bell would fall for earnings, which was also mixed. Microsoft came in nicely and rallied after the bell, while BIDU and KLAC both fell significantly. Futures are pretty quiet as I type commentary, but they are slightly green. Gold came in strong closing up $5.40 at $771 an ounce and crude rallied to all time new highs up $2.34 to close at $90.34 a barrel. [...]

I don’t intend a live blog of Garrett’s book Harangue (1926)--about half finished--but I did want to share these observations on the socialist movement of the 1920s, in the words of one of the characters who treats the whole movement with some distance. Elsewhere, Garrett treats the problem of how and why the wealthy "buy" socialist ideology as a means of distinguishing themselves from the bourgeoisie. Here we have the anatomy of the movement as this one character understands it: Youth in its radical, self-conscious phase, and not very vital, else it would not ha[...]

Inside Day On The U.S. Dollar
The dollar’s wide ranging day on October 22nd has created support at 77.09 and resistance at 78.20. The past two days have been trading within the range creating an inside day. This also is setting up as the October 31st FOMC meeting is looming. The Fed Fund futures reflect an 85-plus percent likelihood of a rate cut but this is far from a guarantee. There is ofcourse the chance that the Fed could delay any moves until the December meeting. Keep in mind that a rate cut would weaken an already weak dollar. It May Not Be As Bad As It Looks
The forex is buzzing with comments about the change in the risk environment. The JPY is strengthening against just about everything, stocks are down again following Friday’s rout and the USD retraced last weeks losses against the EUR and GBP. However, if the risk environment was really changing, I would expect bond prices to be rising and yields to be falling. So far, this session, the bond yields would dispute this situation. The 10-year yield is rising, which means bonds are falling. This is not only contrary to the assumed risk bias out there but is against the movement in [...]

I listened to him rip into some guy for making his mind up about the Royalty review when the caller clearly hadn’t. It was Dave’s position that the proposed increases were ’bad for Alberta’ and ’the royalty review report was flawed’. Listening to his rant I couldn’t help but wonder where does someone get good honest information about this topic.

Usd Outlook: Dow Plunges 366 Points
A parade of worse-than-expected earnings numbers from major banks and manufacturers sent Wall Street investors running away from stocks and toward the safety of U.S. government securities. When all was said and done, the Dow had plunged 366 points by the closing bell. Think of the Dow falling as a big rock that is thrown into the middle of a pond. We’ve seen the first splash. Now we have to prepare for the ripples that are going to flow through the international marketplace. What will a falling U.S. stock market, poor corporate performance and falling bond yields do [...]

Yikes!
Friday left the market with a seriously red day and didnt let the bulls close the week green. Heavy volume is normal for options expiration day, but Friday left huge volume which accelerated with each support break on the way down. Very expanded ranges will leave us a little weary into Monday. CAT, MMM, HON all set a negative tone on Friday along with some comments about recession times ahead and then of course weve gone WAY up and in need of a pullback helped things along on Friday. Pakistan also ignited some fear, which I mentioned on Thursday to be wat[...]

Expect Another Preventative Rate Cut
A: Stocks are just off record highs, fed funds target rate is at non-restrictive 4.75%, the US dollar is at record lowers and sinking further, oil is bubbling at record highs, and commodities are at very high levels; hardly an environment that needs rate cuts. But this credit situation is much worse than many people think and the I think the fed is cutting rates now so that when they ’kick in’ in the future it will be just when we need them to! It’s a very confusing time right now, leaving me to focus on the biggest threat to everything: the credit markets. Th[...]

Happy Anniversary!
Reader Liv Douglas reminds me that this is the 20th anniversary of the stock market crash of October 19, 1987. Thanks, Liv -- I’ll be writing my SmartMoney.com column about this. In the meantime, here are Liv’s thoughts:Today marks the 20th anniversary of the infamous stock market crash of 1987. Had you paid attention to Big Media at the time, you’d have sold your stocks, gone into cash and hunkered down for the [inevitable] recession or, perhaps, depression. Big Media was, once again, woefully wrong. If you bought the Dow at 1,738 at the end of October 19, [...]

Corporate Social Responsibility Is A Competitive Advantage
Today the competition for top people is intense. Money is a motivator but it is a common commodity. What else can you offer?A social mission is becoming an essential component for any business. We spend more time at work, we are often never not at work. We get pizza when we work late but how do companies satisfy their people’s hunger to do good things in the world? With all things equal, people will choose to work for companies that have a social mission as part of their mission statement. Google, Salesforce and others, are early examples of this trend.Friday I a[...]

Word For The Day: Fungible
Fungible means interchangeable. The word comes into play when (inter alia) earmarked funds end up in a general account. These funds are then free to be used for purposes other than intended. Example: You would like to go on a vacation but you have unpaid car repair bills. A wealthy uncle hears that you are having financial trouble and sends money to help. However, he would never agree to pay for your vacation - hes nice, but not that nice. Once your uncles money is deposited into your checking account, you are free to spend it as you please. You then get to pay off your[...]

The Truth About The Crash Of 1987
Here’s the draft of my SmartMoney.com column, that will appear later today. Now it can be told! Twenty years after the great stock market crash of October 19, 1987, when the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by more than 22% in a single day, the truth about why it happened can now be revealed. And believe me, I know what really happened. Because I caused the crash myself. Yep, it was me. With a little help from my some bad judgment, some colossal mistakes, and some outright criminality.Back then I ran portfolio management and trading for Wells Fargo Investment Advisors[...]

Volatility Returns
Great Morning! With the FOMC meeting just nine sessions away and counting, markets have done their best guesswork at what the fed has ahead in store for all. Price patterns intraday had followed a similar path: early selloff or sideways chop, ended with a short squeeze higher into the closing bell. Shorts are clearly scared to hold over the closing bell, for obvious reasons. The "Bernanke slam" orchestrated premarket for option-expiry Friday in August has since done it’s design well.

Do You Think Etfs Are As Good As No-load Mutual Funds?
I recently saw an article in the AAII journal about ETFs. Their conclusion was, "Setting aside the transaction cost difference for small investments, and considering only broad-based index funds, the differences are likely to be insignificant." Do you have a difference of opinion?I need more data and more time. I have concluded there will likely be a small advantage to mutual funds in the less liquid asset classes. That is evident from the returns of our mutual fund and ETF portfolios tracked by The Hulbert Financial Digest. For the first 6 months of this year, [...]

Thoughts On Crude Oil’s Record High Above $88 Per Barrel
I have recently suggested investors consider taking some profits in the crude oil market, but prices in the low 80’s price range has not stopped the commodity from continuing its ascent. Crude oil is hitting new historic highs today above $88 per barrel. The contrarian in me prefers to buy weakness and sell strength, so even though the current rise could continue, I am not going to jump on the momentum train and suggest people pile into crude in the short term. Longer term, though, I think it is worth taking a look at what will ultimately dictate where oil prices go.To understand o[...]

Dear Trading Friends. On our last blog report I had discussed the possibility of the market staging a pullback off the current levels it was at during that post. The S&P500 E-Mini was trading in the 1555-60 zone at that time. Well, the good ol Fed notes came out and when they want to get the market rallying ...they know what to say. Or at least they know how to get traders to construe things a certain way. The market took off higher towards the 1572 area the afternoon after the notes were released. Strong Earnings Reports Lift The Market
The market is getting a nice boost in early trading after several companies reported stronger than expected earnings last night and this morning.Big companies like Intel (INTC), Yahoo (YHOO), Coca-Cola (KO), Abbot Labs (ABT), CSX, UTX, etc. all beat consensus expectations for earnings. This has given the market a boost, and helped the Nasdaq pop more than +1.0% so far.Earnings estimates have been continually trimmed in recent weeks, such that expectations were running very low as companies began to report. Investor Sentiment Check Reveals Too Much Complacency
In my opening post, I alluded to the fact that investor sentiment seems to have become a bit complacent. Given how much the markets have rallied, this isn’t surprising. Investors always become complacent toward the later stages of a given move. But the indicators I track are flashing a caution signal right now, and this is why I have raised cash and moved to a more defensive position. This morning, the volatility indexes (VIX/VXN) are spiking +13% higher, but the put/call ratios are still too low. This is not a good signal, and confirms what the moving[...]

But The Contract Says...
No matter what you do you can never cover all aspects of a purchase for real property. So, what happens when you have a properly drafted contract and the other party decides that this does not apply to them? A common example is when you take possession of your new home, only to find the seller has removed shelves, mirrors, plumbing fixtures or other "securely attached" items leaving holes in the walls and a big paint and repair job for you. For those buying and selling real estate, anything that is "securely attached" to the home i[...]

Indices Cave In Steep Afternoon Slide!
Indices Cave in Steep Afternoon Slide!By Harry Boxer, The Technical Trader (www.thetechtrader.com) The markets had what in my mind is a huge negative downside reversaltoday, and it came suddenly. The day started out with a surge to theupside with strong pre-market futures. The market opened strong, workedits way higher to mid-day, began to back off a little bit after lunch, but then plunged. In an hour the Nasdaq 100 was down around 50 points, the S&P 500 around 20. They tried to bounce back, did a Fibonacciretracement, failed at resistance, and we[...]

A Couple Of My Favorite Marin 1.0 Houses
I love watching the "selling" activity of the above San Rafael house. The highest official listing price I have seen for this house was $884,000 in mid-2006 (yes, it’s real DOM is that long). So if it were to sell at its current asking price that would be a price reduction of 33%. However, I am fairly confident that at the bubble peak this house could hav[...]

No Trend Break, Though Market Mostly Lower
No Trend Break, Though Market Mostly LowerBy Harry Boxer, The Technical Trader (www.thetechtrader.com) The markets had a down day for the most part, other than the Nasdaq100, but it sure felt a lot better than that, because many of thestocks we follow had a strong session, particularly in the Chinesesector, which mostly had an exceptional day today. The day started out with some back and forth action on theNasdaq 100, while the S&P 500 dropped early. They did rallymid-morning, reaching the morning highs just before lunch hour, andthen the[...]

How Low Can The Dollar Go
The US Dollar has lost 65% of its value against the Euro over the last 7 years. Its no coincidence that a massive Hedge Fund industry has risen in its wake. There are around 8,000 hedge funds globally managing over 2.5 trillion Dollars. All of them placing bets on global markets. Betting the market will rise, will fall, will do nothing. The vast majority are long-only which means they benefit from a rising market. The underlying trend behind this level of speculation - the likes of which the world has never seen is the fear of the worlds reserve currency, the U[...]

Analysts Got It Right As Google Passes Wal-mart In Market Value
Regular readers of this blog know that sell-side analyst research reports are not something I reference very often for trading recommendations. The numbers show that analyst picks fail to beat the market consistently, and do so with more volatility, just as most mutual funds do. That said, given that most Wall Street research is positive in nature (they want you to buy stocks, after all, so they make money) there will be a lot of times that I agree with the analysts, merely due to probability. In May I wrote positively about search giant Google (GOOG) when it was trading in the low [...]

Wednesday Split Market
Wednesday gave us a split market with the Nasdaq red and the S&P 500 along with the Dow closed red. Volume was higher on the Nasdaq and the NYSE, leaving an accumulation day on the Nasdaq and distribution on the NYSE. Crude closed up 99 cents at $81.25 a barrel and Gold was up $2.80 at $745.90 an ounce. Strange day really lackluster for the most part and left us in a narrow range. Into Thursday data picks up and should give us a wider range and the market will await inflation data Friday morning with GEs earnings. The Dow was very weak on Wednesday[...]

GOOG expands video ads through AdSense[CompWorld] The program allows advertisers to distribute their video-based ads across the AdSense network, not just on YouTube, Google said in a statement. How Can I Double My Money In The Market?
I have an insurance settlement of $10,000. What’s the best way to invest this money to double or triple this amount? I have a 403b account that has a balance of $6,000 with deposits of $40 every two weeks. I am 25 years old and buying a house is one of my top priorities. I have a hard time saving money. My girlfriend thinks this money should go in a CD from Chase. They offer a 5.0 interest rate.First, I’m very happy to see you have already grown your 403(b) to $6,000. That amount alone, invested in an all equity portfolio, should be w[...]
