5 Important Documents To Keep When You Buy A New Home

If you’re like most people, the last thing you’re thinking about when you take possession of a new home, is selling the home. However, when you take possession of a new home, you’re going to get a lot of documentation from different sources, and you will need most of it when you do eventually sell. When it does come time to sell, it can be quite costly and time consuming to get the necessary documentation together if you’ve lost it. If you’re buying a home from a builder, you may get a binder of information, but some of this stuff will come from your lawyer, and some you may even have to r[...]

Rollercoaster

Tuesday left a green market across the broader markets on higher volume for the NYSE and Nasdaq. It was nice to see the participation and accumulation day for the broader markets today. However we are still in range on the Nas 100, while the Nas Composite dropped the 200dma for a short while but managed to climb back over. S&P 500 is still over 70.7% fib support and left a big spinning top candle. The Dow dropped just under the 70.7% support, but did close green and with a huge spinning top as well. Spinning tops just mean undecided market but closes pretty mid range for a neut[...]

Imitation Is The Sincerest Form Of Flattery: Warren Buffett And Berkshire Hathaway

We analyze the performance of Berkshire Hathaway’s equity portfolio and explore potential explanations for its superior performance. Contrary to popular belief we show Berkshire’s investment style is best characterized as a large-cap growth. We examine whether Berkshire’s investment performance is due to luck and find that beating the market in 28 out of 31 years places it in the 99.99 percentile; however, incorporating the magnitude by which Berkshire beats the market makes the ?luck? explanation unlikely even after taking into account ex-post selection bias. After adjusting for [...]

Ultra-luxury Real Estate Market En Fuego In Boston

Banker & Tradesman says the ultra-luxury real estate market is red-hot, these days.A total of 81 condos with price tags of $2 million or more were sold through October, 37 percent higher than the same period in 2006. Sales are even more brisk than the same months in 2005, when the Bay State housing market hit its peak, according to statistics from The Warren Group, parent company of Banker & Tradesman. One of the interesting parts of this what it means about the suburban real estate market, as well.Presumably, those who are buying in Boston had to sel[...]

Want To Write Better - Read Better

Writing is an essential marketing skill - pretty hard to be very effective without it - whether that’s actually writing the words yourself or being able to recognize a well written sales letter from a freelancer. Most every high school English teacher in the world will give you the same advice: if you want to be a good writer, you have to read a lot. Two of my favorite books on writing, Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott and On Writing by Stephan King offer this as a key.Just about any reading will improve[...]

Xerox Dividend Is It Really True?

Xerox (XRX) announced the restart of a quarterly dividend after a five year hiatus. Xerox also announced the return of its debt to an investment grade rating. Clearly there is cause for optimism. Lets look at a few things. The stock dropped substantially in the summer and has not really recovered. The dividend is payable at the end of Jan 08 to holders of record as at Dec 31 07. This should block year end tax selling which must look awfully attractive in this kind of market.Since launching its stock buyback program in October 2005, Xerox to date has repurchased about 129[...]

Some quotes from newspapers across the country over the past few days: Alberta is still a promised land and the positives greatly outweigh any short-term downside. Interest rates aren’t going up. Is the pendulum starting to swing the other way? It may be... As you’ll see with the charts below, the pendulum seems to have started its swing in the other direction. Don’t get me wrong, we’re still seeing a drop in prices[...]

And the Yen is higher this morning, which is public enemy 1 in my book.Citigroup (C) got rid of CEO Prince, and said that it could have up to $11B in additional write-downs. But even the news of Prince’s exit couldn’t lift the stock, which is down -4% and weighing on the overall financial sector.Oil is down[...]

Cmhc Housing Forecast For 2008

Or should I say Richard vs Richard...Sara and I attended the CMHC housing forecast for Alberta on Thursday. In a clear shot Richard Corriveau, analyst from CMHC said and I quote, it’s "absolutely ridiculous" based on economic fundamentals for the province that prices should fall in 2008. When Richard Goatcher - the CMHC analyst for Edmonton - got up he took a much softer approach, saying that the forecast for the Edmonton market was a 7-8% increase in 2008 "IF" some of the current inventory gets chewed down.I don’t know what planet Richard the first is from but I’[...]

What Is Behind Door Number Two?

Sometimes taking a Road Less Traveled is where another truer reality may be found. The general media loves bad news because it sell papers and TV time. There is nothing at all that get the juices flowing over sunshine. But we will go out of our way to hear about that horrible rain storm that is coming. While the profits of doom hyperventilate about a world crashing, let me inject some good news for everyone to enjoy. It has been a busy week for good news and bad. It is just that the good is usua[...]

Hello Mr. Bear

Thursday brought out the bears for a double digit loss on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, a triple on the Dow. Volume kicked up a notch, leaving a distribution day that left a pretty serious mark on the market. The credit worries cockroach is back and energy costs continue to fly. Crude closed down 99 cents at $93.54 after hitting $96.00 a barrel intraday. Gold fell on the day as the dollar got a lift, gold closed down $2.10 at $793.20 an ounce. Into Friday we close out the week, but also the biggest piece of economic data of the week. The jobs[...]

Market Shrugs Off More Solid Economic Data

Yesterday’s GDP report was stronger than expected, showing the economy hasn’t slowed all that much yet. And we know that jobs growth is among the most important factors. So the bulls cheered this morning when the October payrolls report showed a gain of +166k jobs (vs. consensus of +80k).But the enthusiasm for stocks quickly waned, and the market sold off as quickly as it had run up. Since then, we have been bouncing around in early trading. Tech is hanging in well, while the financials are under heavy selling pressure.Oil prices ar[...]

The Fed Delivered

Wednesday brought the market the package it was expecting to give us a green close on higher volume leaving accumulation days on the NYSE and Nasdaq. All while crude is hitting record highs closing up $3.86 at $94.24, crude wasnt the only commodity at record highs today. Gold traded at 28 year highs up to $802.50 today. All of this after the Fed cut the Fed fund rate and the discount rate by .25. The statement did leave us back to a data dependent market on future cuts, but everything else was exactly what the market wanted. Bernanke seems to be listening [...]

Lies, All Lies

We live in a country of lies, deception, and denial. Why? The longer we keep the American consumer believing all is well, the longer Boobus Americanus will continue charging his credit card for stuff. The longer we keep the wool over his head the longer we (the elected officials) will retain power and be allowed[...]

Citigroup Rumors Spark Wildfire-like Selling

The markets were simply ugly today. The started down early, and hardly bounced at all. I thought we might see some type of rally attempt late in the day, but the selling pressure intensified and the indexes basically closed at their lows for the day. There were the usual signs of panic selling. The ARMS Index hit 2.90, a very high level. And the volatility index (VIX) spiked fully +27% as fear reared its head.Breadth was atrocious today. The advance/decline line was as bad as its been since July, and downside volume on the N[...]

Should I Be Investing In Euro-denominated Bonds?

Very recently, Alan Greenspan said the world now had two currencies that were international stores of value -- the dollar and the euro. This brings the following questions to my mind: 1. Would it not provide additional diversity to divide the fixed-income portion of a buy-and-hold portfolio between dollar and euro-denominated bonds? 2. Does DFA offer any euro-denominated bond funds? If not, why not? 3. Can Merriman or DFA recommend any euro-denominated bond funds? Thanks very much...I am looking forward to your answer. Thanks for the email. Not unlike other asset class decision[...]

Gold Rising Against All Currencies

The savvy US Investor is faced with a tough but clear problem. He or She realizes the US Dollar is chronically ill. He or She realizes the need to protect their assets to maintain purchasing power. The unsavvy US investor believes the rubbish inflation numbers put out by the government. They takes no action to protect themselves until its too late and obvious the cost of living is exploding. Unfortunately, and at that time, they will have no means of generating an income sufficient to keep pace with inflation! But for the savvy US investor the answer is (supp[...]

Multi-family Construction On The Rise In Edmonton

Canada Mortgage and Housing (CMHC) released their monthly stats on new housing construction today. The numbers are surprising, especially when you look at their charts. Sheldon and I are going to their "Housing Outlook" conference tomorrow so we’ll be loaded with stats and charts to share. But for now, back to today’s report..."Housing starts within the Edmonton Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) increased by 40.3 per cent from September 2006 to 1,978 units. So far this year, total housing starts have increased by 5.7 per cent over the numbers reported after three quarters o[...]

Oil Service Holdr (OIH) Resumes Downtrend

NOTE: Please click on the charts below to enlarge them if they do not appear clearly.Much like the previous day, stocks remained in a holding pattern ahead of this afternoon’s Fed report on interest rates and economic policy. Just as the major indices finished modestly higher on Monday, they closed lower by an insignificant percentage yesterday. The narrow, sideways trading range of the broad market was also similar to the prior day’s price action. Continued leadership in the tech arena enabled the Nasdaq Composite to close unchanged, but the S&P 500, Dow Jo[...]
