Do Weak January’s Lead To A Weak Yearly Performance

So far in 2008 the S&P 500 is down just over 9%. Since 1960 the S&P 500 has finished with a negative return in January only 17 times as shown by the table below. When the S&P 500 has finished with a negative January return there have only been 3 years (2003, 1982 and 1968) in which the S&P 500 has ended the year with a gain greater than 5%.
